General description of the Institution
Montanuniversitaet Leoben (MUL) is specialized in the field of mineral resources, metallurgy and material sciences. The research and education profile is set along the value chain from mineral deposits to production processes, to product design and recycling of end of life products. There is huge experience with licensing, permits and allowances as result of excellent cooperation with Austrian authorities and involvement of experts to those societal and juridical activities.
Furthermore MUL is experienced in explaining mining activities among citizens trough activities at secondary school (MUL show truck) and strong links with industrial associations and authorities. Montanuniversitaet Leoben (MUL) will contribute to RAISE objective as follow. Montanuniversitaet Leoben (MUL) has numerous approaches to inform secondary school students about raw materials. Every year a show truck tours around Austria and presents the university and its research fields. Students get a better understanding of raw materials and the raw materials value chain.
Role in the project
The department of Nonferrous Metallurgy has close ties with a secondary school in Leoben, and gives pupils the opportunity to take part in research activities through internships. The students perform experiments and document their results. The written report will be presented both to their teachers at school and to the department leaders at Montanuniversitaet.
These activities can be broadened under the RAISE Project, whereas companies with ties to Montanuniversitaet will be asked to take a role as facilitator for new internships.
